Community acceptance is a key indicator for the long-term success of a general aviation (GA) airport. Communities located near GA airports are no stranger to the activities of the airport—including flights to and from the location. With consistent flights comes consistent noise, which can hinder a positive community
outlook on GA activities.
The Federal Aviation Administration doesn’t mandate flight curfews to lessen noise, so encouraging noise abatement is up to the discretion of the airport.
At Naples Airport (APF), operators observe quite hours from 10 PM to 7 AM. With 360 aircraft calling Naples home, the initiative started over ten years ago and is continuing strong today with average compliance rates of 98%.
Importantly, pilots, passengers, and the broader community are no stranger to the program.
And what happens if a new pilot flying into Naples is unaware of the program? This initiative has a noise abatement specialist available. Should a pilot fly outside of encouraged times, the specialist reaches out to make the pilot aware of the program and encourages them to observe dedicated hours.
Data is shared each month to the Airport’s Board. And community support is clear. Feedback from private operators and passengers indicate that they would willingly change their flight’s hours.
Robin King, director of communications at Naples Airport, provided insight into ways the airport is fostering community acceptance and engagement. Print ads decorate the walls of the terminal, swag is available for people and pets, and informational pamphlets emphasize the mission of the initiative: “Fly Safe, Fly Quiet.”
“When it comes to getting the information to your audience, I would encourage others to pursue opportunities to get the message out even if it’s outside the norm,” said King. “We’ve done everything from informational tables at the zoo to kid’s school activity packets. Getting opportunities to spread the word in creative ways is crucial for awareness.”
Ever pushing forward to a full 100% compliance, Naples Airport recently received an award of commendation from the Sunshine District.
