NATA asked AvAdvisors to assemble 2024 data for the TOP 500 airports and assess trends in our industry. Measured by FAA aircraft movements, overall activity is up 4.5% over the past 5 years (2019 – 2024) as use of private aviation has recovered from Covid-related declines in 2020.
For 2024, 5-year Jet arrivals and departures increased 11.5%, with Turbine and Piston activity declining 4% and 16% respectively.

Focusing on Jet activity over the past 5 years (2019 – 2024), a solid majority (73%) of TOP 500 airports report Jet movement uptrends with an average increase of 28% as of 2024. The general trend is Jet activity peaking in 2022 followed by slight declines as pent-up travel and changing customer demand rippled through flight schedules. So far, the time-saving and mobility benefits appear to remain attractive to those new to private aviation.
Of those airports reporting increases there are a select few seeing consistent growth in Jet activity measured by a “Resilience” score.

The 54 “Resilient” airports have successfully navigated through the Covid challenges and managed continued growth through to 2024. A good example is the Gulf Shores International Airport (JKA) in southern Alabama served by Gulf Air Center where FBO owners and airport leadership have teamed-up to present a welcoming environment for private aviation. The sole FBO has invested in upgraded facilities, IS-BAH registration, NATA Safety1st employee training, and unique customer services such as covered long-term vehicle storage. Airport leaders actively encourage private hangar additions, with community involvement to guide responsible growth in this beautiful, shore-lined region. JKA reports a 5-year growth in Jet activity of 44% resulting in a steady climb in the TOP 500 ranking to #223.
The airport-by-airport analyses rank the TOP 500 airports based on 2024 “Jet” activity and also show data and trends for the “Turbine” and “Piston” categories (see attached report). Airports and FBOs can use the data to track trends and compare activity data with other airports in a particular region.
The TOP 500 airports may prove useful as you plan your business in a promising business climate for business aviation.
